The Body Mass Index (BMI) calculator assesses weight status for adults by computing a ratio of weight to height, producing a number that falls into standard health categories. This tool uses the established Quetelet index to provide a general indicator of whether an individual's weight is classified as underweight, normal, overweight, or obese. It is a widely used screening method for identifying potential weight-related health risks. Body Mass Index is a widely used metric for assessing potential health risks associated with body weight at a population level. A BMI within the normal range of 18.5 to 24.9 is generally associated with a lower risk of chronic conditions such as type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease. Tracking BMI can help identify trends in weight that may warrant a discussion with a healthcare provider. However, BMI is an indirect measure of body fat and has significant limitations. It does not distinguish between mass from fat and mass from muscle. Consequently, individuals with high muscle mass, such as athletes, may have a high BMI that categorizes them as overweight or obese despite having low body fat. Conversely, older adults who have experienced muscle loss may have a normal BMI while still having excess body fat. Therefore, BMI should be used as a screening tool, not a diagnostic one.

How your BMI is Calculated

The calculation for Body Mass Index (BMI) is based on a standardized formula that relates a person's weight to their height. To determine your BMI, the calculator requires two inputs: your weight in kilograms (kg) and your height in meters (m). The formula is: BMI = weight (kg) / [height (m)]². First, your selected height in meters is squared (multiplied by itself). Then, your weight in kilograms is divided by this squared height value. The resulting number is your BMI score. This score is then categorized according to the World Health Organization (WHO) standard ranges: Underweight (BMI < 18.5), Normal weight (BMI 18.5–24.9), Overweight (BMI 25.0–29.9), and Obesity (BMI ≥ 30.0).
